Daylight Savings in Europe.

One of the many things in this world I can never understand - Daylight Savings! Save and do what? And why not do it with your lights on without changing the time? For Gods sake, its THE time! And people laugh when I say I want to change my age! Bah!

When Hd and I visited Italy, it was the beginning of spring and the time changed and we were clueless. When we went for Breakfast at 9 am, it was actually 10 am. The people took pity on us and gave biscuits to eat and we also missed our train from Venice to Rome. Thank God we were nt flying that day!

Couple of years back I invited two couples for lunch not knowing that the time changed that day. Couple A knew about the time change and came at 12 when it was actually 1. Couple B did nt know and came at 2 when it was actually 1. So how long do you think Couple A and us were drinking juice and water before Couple B came? 1 hour or two? See what I mean about the time change? Stupid!

ps.
The time change is in UK and Europe from tomorrow, 25th March 2007. The US have already sprung forward 2 weeks back. As always, they have to be different in every way!

Exactly Boo.. I just don't understand this. The same thing happened here on friday, I thought the call was at 10:30 AM IST and came to office only by 10AM but the manager in SJ was waiting for 30 minutes already. Day light savings in U.S start by 11th March or so and I had to apologize for no fault of mine ;)

If I read the history, it talks about people getting up with sun and thereby sleeping early and so will burn less oil blah blah.. but in the information age, when most of the offices have centralised AC's and closed windows and all lights on even at 12Noon and the sun is scorching, I don't don't don't understand what are they saving by this...

I am for daylight savings...I mean it throws me off a bit the first couple of days...but hey it is backed by enough research that it saves $$$ and boosts the country's bottomline (ofcourse due to trimmed energy consumption)...... and in a capitalist economy that's all that matters so, why not?? but yeah i wouldn't mind changing my own biological clock too :)

first, it's day light 'saving' time, no 's' that is!!

In the norhtern hemisphere beyond the tropic of cancer, there's a big difference in the length of the day in summers and winter. And day light after a gloomy winter is so welcome.
So we leave the office at 5:00 when it's actually 4:00 we get another full hour of daylight to enjoy a game of golf or tennis or to roller balde in the park. Isn't that a great idea! This was probably the main reason but was felt to be too trivial by the law makers. So a new point that we could save electricity, which was probably true then, was made by the law makers.

Yet Arizona and Indiana farmers were not for the change coz for farmers work hour is between sunrise and sunset. An additional hour in daylight doesn't make sense when u are out in the daylight all day! The farmers in these states had a bigger voice, I guess...

I like the concept of day light saving time though one needs to get up early to get to office in time. Reminds us of our biological clock!! But it does give us a full hour in daylight in the park. Also allows u an hour more of sleep when we switch back to standard time in winter!!

See, this is why one should live near the Equator. Like, in India. Not envy-creating Europe :-P

Megha - Thank you!

Kowsalya - I really want back all the hours I lost, you know! For the past 3 years I always flew back to India for winter and never got the one hours back!

Manchus - Replying soon...

Gee Prakash, chill! Daylight Savings is an allowed plural! Google for yourself and while we are at nitpicking, its Daylight not day light.(with a space!) Sorry, could nt resist! I was only half kidding about it anyway. And know what? My kid got up at 8.30 am today and Im already loving Daylight Savings! :)

Priya - I knew you would say exactly this if you commented! Ha ha! Sour grapes!

You know what after reading this post and some reading on DST, I was wondering how God measures our lifetime, it is based on time or day. If its time, for people who lose some hours by travelling through DST, does he count and put those extra hours...
I must have been in some mood, something as silly as DST got me thinking about death-time
