I am so happy that Thatha (grandpa) and Paati (grandma) denote both the set of grandparents in Tamil. Thank God for small blessings. :)

Boo, in our caste we do differentiate maternal and paternal grandparents. Aachi thatha - maternal, paati paataiya - paternal. they cannot be interchanged like mama and chithappa cannot be interchanged. I always go uneasy when people refer my aachi as paatti or my paattaiya as thatha.
i still dont get it Boo, though I am married!
I find it hard to say in laws as appa and amma, but indha vaazhga tamizh enakku puriyalaye!
