Azhagan

Watched the movie Azhagan the other day on TV for the umpteenth time. Read somewhere that the movie was nt a hit. How can it not be? Such a lovely movie. I wish I were in my twenties when movies like Azhagan, Nayagan, Unnaal mudiyum Thambi. etc.. were released. Azhagan is about a widower Azhagappan awesomely played by Mamooty with 4 adopted children. Love the way the kids say their names. (B for Baby speaking!) Three women lay their eyes on him - a college student, a teacher and a dancer. Our hero has his eyes for the dancer, Bhanupriya. Until I saw this movie, I ve never liked Bhanupriya. I ve always thought she was too loud but a good dancer of course. In this movie, she has done a superb job. There’s this one scene where Mamooty brings his daughter to Bhanupriya's dance school and she is shocked to know that he’s married. But when Mammotty says that his wife is dead, Bhanupriya turns her face away, gives a victorious, relieved smile and then with a sad face says "Sorry about that" to Mamooty. That’s totally a fantastic expression. Kudos to K Balachandar, the director. And the song "Sangeetha Swarangal" - WOW what do I say about that? The sweet nothing telephone conversation between them a whole night with the awesome song in the background and the Doordarshan TV ending their telecast and then beginning in the morning. Absolutely beautiful picturisation. Wonder how this song would be picturised now with all these 24 hours TV channels! Probably when the Sun Music channel stops saying "Hallo? Nalla irukeengala? Unga per enna?" and then start the same non-stop nonsense in the morning with "Inniki enna kurippu solla poreenga? TV volume a kammi pannunga"! Grrr......!

My fav scene... (after Sangeetha Swarangal, that is!)the one where Mamooty comes to talk to Bhanupriya and she's dancing in a rage... he turns off the music and she still continues as rhythmically as before... the one and only movie where I too liked Bhanupriya! Balachander sometimes just dazzles!

oh!!!! i am so happy to have a found a fellow 'Azhagan' lover.Nothing equals the subtle love and mutual admiration shared b/w mamooty and banupriya..As in usual KB's way, lot of thoughts conveyed..every moment in the movie is worth recollecting.

The worst part is however,i have never been able to get hold of azhagan cd or dvd..inspite of presence of cds like 'en pondatti padichava' in spencer, if i ask for azhagan cd, it has always been a vigorous 'no-no' nod:(

Azhagan trivia

Actually Azhagan was a medium hit - considering that it was aimed at the city people. KB did that movie for KC films International, on a special request to Mr Kovai Chezhiyan; otherwise KB was directing for Kavithalaya (his home production)only. Apparently KB had written the script for Kamal, but somehow that didn't transpire. Mammooty had performed the role perfectly - I think Mammooty was ultimately a better choice. Yes the dances by Bhanupriya were excellent in that movie. It was also the debut film for Madhubala, the naughty college girl. The music was by Maragathamani, who had also scored the music for Vaaname Ellai.

I remember watching Azhagan in our famous SIGC hostel :)

It was one of the few good Tamil movies that I watched in my lifetime. Not that my lifetime is nearing end!!

Just that the prospect of watching a good Tamil movie without translating seems elusive. The jokes are lost in translation!!

There is no other films that equals to Azhagan, wah! what a fantastic and beautiful love story, not only to be watched by the lovers, but also by others also. Very good story, acting, and good music. We cannot point out at one specific person's act in this film, because all and everyones acting is perfect. I very much like the Sophna character, a very naughty at the same time very admirable character. It is really impossible for any other actress to play such a role other than Madhubala. Also the young kids played very beautiful role, especially that little boy tells" namma yengavathu poi poranthirukkalamda!
". very nice

I was quite surprised to see the feedback on this movie. I happened to watch not only the movie but also the shooting of this movie which was shot near my school in T.nagar, Chennai.
As far as the film is concerned, its one of the goodies delivered from KB. "Sathi maali" song from that movie is one of my all time favourite song.
